User Experience Design
Digital transformation created by remarkable experiences by remarkable people
A a 17-week program including 5 weeks of co-op placement in industry. User Experience Design is a practice-led postgraduate course for designers who want to accelerate their career in digital environments and creative experiences by engaging users through remarkable design solutions and develop their entrepreneurship either in corporate, SME or start-up.
You will receive instruction through lectures and seminars to support your practice with the intent to equip you with the intellectual engagement, technical skills and professional development for a career in user experience–working from real life social, cultural and economic problems through an imaginative approach to the design that makes things better.
Your practice is informed by subject criticality and a rigorous approach to human centered design research that identifies users needs, collects feedback, and tests solutions to explicitly seek new perspectives and knowledge. Prototyping and modelling iteration is equally as valuable as your HCD research insights and analysis.
You will establish a strong interdisciplinary collaboration and designerly ways of thinking about value creation using entrepreneurship and innovation business modelling that develops your visual and verbal rhetoric to communicate your project to a non-design, non-technology literate audience.
Your co-op placement will allow you the opportunity to transfer your education and technical expertise to industry. You will be expected to work closely with peers and actively contribute to the co-op’s current projects across strategy, business and capability, and design outcomes. 12–14 hours of notional study per week plus full time co-op placement.
Define your professional identity as a user experience designer. We will teach and support your digital transformation learning guided by the principles of human centred design research; how to design and how to think–by unpacking our Common Basic Framework. Create remarkable experiences across strategy, design and technology to accelerate your career in Asia’s fastest-growing creative industry. Our primary function is to deliver the highest quality design education to you through structured units of learning to support your self-initiated capstone project, the ‘brief’, which will be evaluated at the final submission.
Tier 1 Insight and development
This first unit focusses on developing curiosity; looking at not what’s probable, but what’s possible. Scaffolded with you problem statement definition and investigated using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research methods resulting in user experience personas informed by analysis from the research data.
Tier 1 Experience and imagination
This unit unpacks project data and introduces the Unified Modelling Language (UML) to develop actors and use cases as proprietary creative intelligence for wireframing the outcome experience. You will also be introduced to the principles and elements of human centered design such as affordance and aesthetics that are grounded in usability.
Tier 1 Prototyping and modelling
This unit focusses on the iteration of active experimentation, concrete experience, reflective observation and abstract conceptualization through prototyping/modelling and concept testing the design proposition with and through user personas.
Tier 2 Leadership and negotiation
This unit focusses on your self-acutalisation in communicating and managing stakeholders using visual and verbal rhetoric; a language that is simple enough to unpack complex design challenges to peers, and more importantly, non-designers.
Tier 2 Innovation and entrepreneurship
This unit further develops your value proposition resulting in the presentation of a Lean Canvas–a methodology for communicating innovation projects that is widely used by designers and entrepreneurs to get a brutally simple snapshot of the project’s capability when talking to potential funding bodies, sponsors or investors.
Tier 3 Co-op evaluation
During your co-op this unit will indicate performance of your employability through observation, peer feedback, self-evaluation and reflection on practice. Your evaluation is in two parts, completed by the co-op, and yourself. It is intended to be a useful resource that supports your learning and practice through peer feedback that’s in the form of a dialogue, not a monologue.
Tier 3 Capstone project
This final unit is the summation of your learning journey which will enable you to synthesize the learning, skills and knowledge of your program experience. You are required to submit an original user experience design, a reflective journal documenting your learning week by week, a Lean Canvas, and defend your work in a viva, face to face examination.
